
Sea Kayak Activity Guide
It's important to us that you find the type of Sea Kayaking adventure you are looking for, but also the most suitable for your paddling experience. The guide below should help you, but please call us if you are still unsure.

✓ Best for: Complete beginners, or those who haven’t paddled on the sea before
✓ Activity: Coached session, building key skills and confidence on the water
✓ Duration: 90 minutes
✓ Type of craft: Sit-on-top Kayak
✓ Environment: By the beach, in sheltered conditions
✓ Best for: Everyone, including complete beginners
✓ Key features: Short skills session, followed by scenic leisurely coastline journey
✓ Duration: 2 hours (half and full day tours are available for private bookings)
✓ Type of craft: Sit-on-top Kayak (doubles can be booked in advance)
✓ Environment: Along and close to the coastline, in sheltered conditions
✓ Best for: Complete beginners, or those who haven’t paddled on the sea before
✓ Key features: Coached session, building a strong foundation of paddling skills, alongside an understanding of tides and weather, and how they effect our paddling
✓ Duration: 6 hours
✓ Type of craft: Sit-on-top Kayak or Sea Kayak
✓ Environment: Along and close to the coastline, in sheltered conditions
✓ Best for: Those who sea kayak at least a few times each year, and are looking to improve skills in more challenging conditions; aspiring Sea Kayak Award, Coastal Sea Kayak Award, or Sea Kayak Leader candidates
✓ Key features: Coached session, focussing on the skills or conditions the group wants to experience e.g. rock hopping, paddling in stronger wind or bigger swell, launching/landing in surf, crossing currents, rescues and self-rescues. Typically the group will be involved in choosing the activity and location for each day.
✓ Duration: 1-2 days
✓ Type of craft: Sit-on-top Kayak or Sea Kayak
✓ Environment: Appropriate for the type of experience wanted by the group, in moderate conditions
✓ Best for: People who want a bespoke experience, or to spend time working on a specific skill, or to learn on a date of their own choosing
✓ Key features: 1:1 Coached session, focussed entirely on your needs which will be discussed in advance and on the day, feedback and recommendations for development will be provided at the end of the session
✓ Duration: 3 or 6 hours
✓ Type of craft: Sit-on-top Kayak or Sea Kayak
✓ Environment: Location and conditions will be in line with the coaching aims
✓ Best for: Paddlers with some experience, but also suitable for complete beginners; a perfect stepping stone from the Introduction to Sea Kayaking course
✓ Key features: Short skills session, followed by long journey exploring coastline features and encountering wildlife
✓ Special feature: we run a 1-day training course the day before each Sheltered Trip, if you want to practice some skills or get acclimatised to the location or conditions.
✓ Duration: 6 hours
✓ Type of craft: Sit-on-top Kayak or Sea Kayak
✓ Environment: Along and close to the coastline, in sheltered conditions
✓ Best for: paddlers who are past the beginner stage and are comfortable paddling in less sheltered conditions, or who want to experience those conditions; aspiring Sea Kayak Award, Coastal Sea Kayak Award, or Sea Kayak Leader candidates
✓ Key features: One or more days of self-contained trips, returning to your accommodation at the end of each day. Long journeys exploring and playing in coastline features and conditions, and encountering wildlife.
✓ Special feature: we run a 1-day training course the day before each Coastal Trip, if you want to practice some skills or get acclimatised to the location or conditions.
✓ Duration: 6 hours each day, for one or more consecutive days
✓ Type of craft: Sit-on-top Kayak or Sea Kayak
✓ Environment: Along and close to the coastline, in moderate conditions
✓ Location: From April to October we focus on a named section of the coastline e.g. North Pembrokeshire or Green Scar/Solva, and from November to March we go wherever the conditions are optimal!
✓ Best for: paddlers with a fair amount of experience paddling in a range of conditions, or who have completed an Intermediate Sea Kayaking Skills course first, aspiring Sea Kayak Leader or Advanced Sea Kayak Leader candidates. If this is your first Island trip, you may prefer Caldey Island as it has the shortest and least demanding crossing.
✓ Key features: Two or more days of self-contained trips, returning to your accommodation at the end of each day. We hope to cross to the Island at least once, and either land (where permitted), explore a section of the Island coastline, or circumnavigate it entirely
✓ Special feature: we run a 1-day training course the day before each Island Trip, if you want to practice some skills or get acclimatised to the location or conditions.
✓ Duration: 6 hours each day, for two or more consecutive days
✓ Type of craft: Sea Kayak
✓ Environment: Along the coastline and crossing tide races. Typically we schedule these trips on neap tides, staying in moderate conditions most of the time, but technically these are classified as Advanced conditions as we must cross tide races to/from the Island
