Sea Paddleboarding Improver, 27th Jun

Intermediate/Improver level (sheltered to moderate water)

From 95 British pounds

What to expect

Already comfortable on a paddleboard, but know there’s a big difference between paddling in calm conditions and paddling in wind or swell? This 1 day course is designed for paddlers beyond the beginner stage who want to improve their technique, build confidence in more dynamic conditions, and develop the judgement needed to paddle more safely and independently on the sea. This course is not suitable for complete beginners. You must already be confident controlling your board, standing while paddling, and getting back on independently after a fall. Previous sea paddling experience is not essential, but you should paddle fairly regularly and have a good level of fitness, as you’ll be paddling for 4-6 hours during the day. We’ll start in sheltered water, then progress into more moderate conditions as appropriate for the group and weather forecast, including a short journey along the coastline. Locations are chosen to allow safe progression and will be confirmed at least 48 hours beforehand. This course goes beyond the basics. You’ll refine your technique and learn more efficient ways to paddle in wind, chop, swell and small surf, helping you cover longer distances and cope better when conditions become more challenging. We’ll also look at how different conditions require different approaches, so you become a more adaptable and effective paddler. The course includes more in-depth self-rescue and rescue skills, with the chance to practise them in more dynamic conditions, plus a deeper understanding of wind, swell and tides so you can make safer decisions and paddle more independently. We may also explore how to paddle safely around coastal features such as caves and rocky shoreline. Included in the course fee are the paddleboard, paddle, leash and waistbelt, buoyancy aid, helmet, dry bag (for your packed lunch and extra layer), and waterproof cag if needed. You’re welcome to use your own suitable sea paddling equipment for a reduced fee. Please bring appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather and sea temperature, drinks, snacks, a packed lunch, and a towel and change of clothes for after the session. Summer wetsuits are available to hire if required. A great next step after this course is one of our Coastal Paddleboarding Trips, where you can put your new skills into practice for an extended period. We usually schedule these the day after this Improver Course.
