What to expect
Improve your skills, confidence and enjoyment in swell, surf, wind, current, rock hopping, crossings or rescues, in a ‘Moderate water’ environment. This day is aimed at paddlers who are past the beginner stage and are looking to progress in more challenging conditions, or work on specific skillsets. Ahead of the course we will contact you to discuss your priorities and will tailor the venue and day accordingly. With a maximum 4:1 student to coach ratio, we can provide individual coaching and feedback throughout. Although we can’t guarantee the weather, ‘Moderate water’ as defined by Paddle UK means wind speed up to 18mph, currents up to 2 knots, crossings up to 2 nautical miles, launching and landing through surf up to 1m high, and straightforward places to land no more than 2 nautical miles apart. We may also paddle in gentle tide races if you want to focus on current, eddy turns or crossings. Ideally you should have paddled: - At least 2 days sea kayaking or white water kayaking (grade 2), in the past 12 months - Wind above 8 mph - Swell around 0.5 metre - Good paddle fitness (able to maintain moderate activity for up to 6 hours per day) - Completed at least one capsize and wet exit (you do not need to be able to self-rescue or roll) If you are unsure of your experience please call us prior to booking, or consider taking our Introduction to Sea Kayaking course instead. Sea kayak, paddle, BA, helmet, spray deck, cag and a drybag are included, or you are welcome to use your own equipment provided it is seaworthy. You must provide your own drysuit/wetsuit/waterproof layers and clothing, footwear, snacks, packed lunch and drink. Accommodation is not included but there are options locally to suit a range of budgets. We will let you know the meeting location at least 48 hours before hand, and there will be a WhatsApp group for communication and sharing photos.
