What to expect

'Green Scar' is another of the great Pembrokeshire sea kayaking trips, located in St. Brides Bay. The route is between Porth Clais (near St. David's) and Newgale, but we can paddle it in either direction or as return journeys to/from the beautiful village of Solva. 'Green Scar' and 'Black Scar' are dramatic rocky outcrops about 1 mile off the coast of Solva, and an essential part of the trip! This experience is all about exploring the stunning coastline and playing in features along the way – the Porth Clais leg of the trip offers numerous rocky playgrounds and arches to paddle through, there are plenty of caves to explore between Solva and Newgale, whilst Newgale itself is a popular surf beach. This trip is ideal for paddlers with some sea kayaking or whitewater experience, but is not suitable for complete beginners. We will provide some coaching at the start of each day, and tips along the way, to help you make the most of the conditions and features we experience. At the upper end, we might paddle in wind of 18mph, swell or surf height around 1m, and currents of 2 knots (i.e. ‘moderate’ water). We will not be paddling in tide races or overfalls. To join the trip you should have the following paddling experience: - At least 2 days sea kayaking or white water kayaking (grade 2) in the past 12 months (in a kayak with a spraydeck) - Wind above Beaufort 3 (so, 13 mph+) - Swell of 0.5 metre - Current faster than 0.5 knot - Completed at least two capsizes and wet exits (you do not need to be able to self-rescue or roll) If you are not sure of your experience, or are borderline, please contact us to discuss. We are also running an Intermediate Skills course on Friday 17th July if you want to practice or develop your skills - you can book on to this separately via the 'Training' section of our website. Sea kayak, paddle, BA, helmet, spray deck, cag and a drybag are included. You must provide your own clothing, footwear, snacks, packed lunch and hot drink. You are welcome to use your own sea kayak and equipment, for a reduced rate, provided it is in seaworthy condition. We will let you know the meeting location at least 24 hours before hand, and there will be a WhatsApp group for communication and sharing photos.
