What to expect

Ramsey Island is one of those ‘must do’ trips for avid sea kayakers – tall cliffs, towering caves, an abundance of wildlife, and challenging tidal streams to navigate. An RSPB nature reserve, the Island is home to many species of birds including peregrines, buzzards, guillemots, razorbills, linnets and skylarks; while its beaches and caves provide shelter to seals and hundreds of seal pups each year. Crossing the Ramsey Sound to get to the island can be an adventure in itself, with tidal streams up to 6 knots, and ‘The Bitches’ never too far from sight. Don't worry if that sounds a bit daunting - this trip is scheduled on a neap tide, so the currents won’t be anywhere near their strongest, ideal if you've not paddled here before. On the first day we will go through some trip planning, and discuss the tidal flows and weather conditions before heading out onto the water to hone our skills and explore the stunning coastline. We may cross the Ramsey Sound to get acclimatised to the flow. On the second day, conditions permitting, we will do a one-way trip from Porth Clais to Whitesands via the West side of the island. This is a committing trip, suitable for paddlers who are experienced on the sea in moderate conditions. You must be comfortable capsizing, although you do not need to be able to self-rescue or roll. Ideally you should have paddled a sea kayak in a tide race at least once before. At the upper end, we might paddle in wind speed of around 18mph, swell height around 1-1.5m, and currents of around 3 knots. If you are not sure whether this trip is right for you, please call us for a chat before booking. We are also running a training course the day before if you would like more time on the water developing your skills in these conditions. We will provide you with a sea kayak, paddle, spray deck, buoyancy aid, helmet, cag, and a dry bag. You must provide your own clothing, footwear, change of clothes, snacks, drinks and packed lunch. You are welcome to use your own sea kayak and equipment, for a reduced rate, provided it is seaworthy. This trip is non-residential but there are usually plenty of nearby accommodation options. We will notify you of the meeting location for Day 1 at least 24 hours before hand, and there will be a WhatsApp group for communication in advance and sharing photos.
