What to expect
Join us for a weekend of unforgettable paddling and wildlife experiences along the stunning North Pembrokeshire coastline. Each day is a self-contained trip, we choose a location and route to match the weather, tides, and the skills and aspirations of the group. The route could be anywhere between Mwnt towards the east end of the north coast and Abereiddy at the west end. We will spend our time exploring the coastline and its many rocky features and caves, and we may have the chance to play in swell or surf. Wildlife encounters could include Atlantic grey seals, porpoises, bottlenose or Risso's dolphins, oyster catchers, razor bills and guillemots; and the rock formations on this stretch of the coastline date back several hundred million years. This trip is designed for paddlers with some previous kayaking experience, but we will provide some coaching at the start of each day, and tips along the way, to help you make the most of the conditions and features we experience. At the upper end of conditions, we might paddle in wind of 18mph, swell or surf height around 1m, and currents of 2 knots (i.e. ‘moderate’ water); we may paddle in gentle tide races. To join the trip you should have the following paddling experience: - At least 2 days sea kayaking or white water kayaking (grade 2) in the past 12 months (in a kayak with a spraydeck) - Completed at least two capsizes and wet exits (you do not need to be able to self-rescue or roll) - Wind above Beaufort 3 (so, 13 mph+) - Swell of 0.5 metre - Current faster than 0.5 knot If you are not sure of your experience, or are borderline, please contact us to discuss. We are also running an Intermediate Skills course on Friday 8th May if you want to practice or develop your skills - you can book on to this separately via the 'Training' section of our website. Included in the trip fee is a sea kayak, paddle, buoyancy aid, helmet, cag and dry bag, or you are welcome to use your own kayak and equipment provided it is in seaworthy condition. You must provide your own clothing, footwear, drinks, snacks and lunch. Accommodation is not included but there will be plenty of available options this time of year. We will let you know the meeting location for the first day at least 24 hours before hand, and there will be a WhatsApp group for communication ahead of the trip and for sharing photos and videos afterwards.
