Introduction to Paddleboarding, 28th May
Novice/beginner level (sheltered water)
What to expect
The sea offers a unique environment for paddlers - we can explore coves and caves, land on secluded beaches, have fun in the surf, and much more! But it takes a little skill to launch and land safely, paddle efficiently, and manoeuvre our paddleboards to truly experience what the coastline has to offer. Whether you are a complete beginner or have paddled before, this course will equip you with a solid foundation of practical skills for Stand Up Paddleboarding on the sea. It is suitable ages 16 and above. We will choose a location and route sheltered from strong wind or swell, typically Tenby South Beach or the surrounding area. This will be confirmed at least 48 hours before hand. On arrival you will meet your coach and be fitted with your equipment. After a short safety briefing, and basic instructions on how to use the equipment, we will get on the water. We will spend the first part of the day learning skills close to the beach, before venturing out along a short stretch of sheltered coastline. You will learn how to control and manoeuvre your paddleboard safely and efficiently through waves, swell and surf. You will learn how to get back onto your board when you fall off, and how to help other paddlers to do so. You’ll develop an understanding of the factors which affect your paddling (such as wind and tide), enabling you to make decisions on and off the water and become a more skilled and independent paddler. Included in the course fee are the SUP, paddle, leash and waistbelt, buoyancy aid, helmet, dry bag (for your packed lunch and extra layer of clothing), and waterproof cag (on cold or rainy days). You are welcome to use your own equipment for a reduced fee provided it is seaworthy. You must provide your own clothing (including footwear) appropriate for the weather and sea temperature; drinks, snacks, packed lunch, and a towel and change of clothing for after the session. If required, you can hire a summer wetsuit from us. As part of the course you can be assessed for the Paddle UK ‘Discover Award’ (there is a small additional certification fee of £7 charged by Paddle UK after the course for this). We also run Sheltered SUP trips the day after each course, where you can put your new skills to the test for a whole day of coastline exploration - see the 'SUP Trips' section of our website for further details.
